The AAA Throws and Jumps Initiative for Young Athletes 21
April
The AAA Board, being concerned to stimulate interest in the throws and jumps,
and in an effort to improve future national standards and encourage
participation are to sponsor a standards initiative in co-operation with the
Territorial Associations and England Athletics.
As
a follow up to the successful Tom Pink Relays for the younger age groups, the
AAA will present salvers for athletes in the under 17 and under 15 age groups
who achieve a Grade 1 standard in a field event in a Territorial or National
Championship.
Only one salver per athlete can be won for a specific discipline in one season
and only at a Territorial or English National Championship.
At the 2009 U17 and U15 Championships a total of 49 Grade One standards were
achieved and we hope to repeat that high standard at the 2010 event.

Martin Duff's National Road Relays Lists of Fastest Times 30
October 2009
The men’s six-stage championships rotated around the regions
before finding its permanent home at Sutton Park in 1995. Since 2001, the lap
distance has been fixed at 5,847 metres and Newham & Essex Beagles’ winning 2009
time of 1:43:14 is the current best.
Chris Davies must be considered the men’s course specialist with
not only the current fastest at 16:25 but with two more times in the top
half-dozen.
The women's race too moved around before settling at Sutton Park
somewhat earlier, in 1990, initially over three stages before switching to four
in 1994. Originally it used a 4.35km loop before settling at 4,315 metres in
1999. The winning Aldershot, Farnham & District time of 57:09 in 2009 is the
course best.
Whilst Steph Twell’s 2007 time of 13:41 is the official best over
the present loop, Paula Radcliffe’s 13:26 over the slightly longer 4.35km lap in
1993 has to be considered the record.

AAA Tom Pink Relays
In 2007 the AAA received a generous bequest from the late Alice and Lewis Pink,
to fund children’s’ activities in memory of their son who was tragically killed
in an accident in the early 1970’s. After discussions with the Pink family, the
AAA agreed to use the money to fund a series of children’s events in support of
and leading up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
For the past two years, successful Tom Pink winter indoor programmes for
children in the Under 11 and Under 13 age groups have been held at the EIS
Stadium in Sheffield, the NIA in Birmingham, Sportcity Manchester and the Lee
Valley Athletics Centre in London. These events, comprising a unique form of
relays and field activities, proved very popular with both the participants and
spectators.
Following discussions with England Athletics, an outdoor version of the
programme has been designed and thoroughly tested, with the object of creating a
bridge between the successful Sportshall Programmes and traditional Track and
Field. The first full outdoor programme was trialed by Cheshire Clubs at Halton
Athletic Track in early June. It proved very successful and so with the help of
Northern Athletics the AAA are presenting this invitation programme at Derby.
There are also plans to hold some of the track relays in conjunction with one or
two of England Athletics Multi-event Championships with the intention of
attracting more spectators to the venue and raising the atmosphere.
The forthcoming winter fixtures will be held at:
Lee Valley Athletics Centre, London October 2009
EIS Sheffield December 2009
NIA Birmingham February 2010
Sportcity, Manchester March 2010
Looking to the future, the AAA intend to follow up the winter programme of 2009
/ 2010 by holding a series of outdoor events in the summer of 2010 at various
venues throughout the country.
