THE AAA FIELD EVENTS
TEAM CHALLENGE
Lee Valley 21 October 2007 |
The purpose of the AAA Field Events Team Challenge is to stimulate
children to take part and enjoy field event competition and its
introduction at Lee Valley certainly met this target. The events
including some specially adapted Highland activities crated lots of
enthusiasm and some good results.
Of particular note was the excellent achievement of 12 year old Ben Grey
of Enfield & Haringey Harriers who threw a 5kg ‘D’ ball over a bar set
at 5 metres high. This is no mean feat and according to the instructor,
Highland Champion Graeme Allan who had travelled down to London to
oversee the Highland activities, this was well in access of any known
previous performance.
Graeme’s wife, Vicci introduced and judged the Highland Steps, a very
difficult test based on highland dancing, requiring good coordination at
high speed but the youngsters rose to the Challenge and demonstrated
that they had the dancing skills to match the Scottish dancers.

Visit of Bernadino Lombao
Bernardino, a TV Promote from Madrid came with his son Nacho to see this
programme in action. He has already introduced the Sportshall Athletics
concept into Spain with some ‘Spanish’ variations and it has been
broadcast as a very successful childrens TV programme.
Bernardino and George Bunner have plans to streamline the presentation
and there is a suggestion that the concept could be used in connection
with the World Indoor Championship when they are held in Valencia. Also,
there is a possibility of a future international competition in the form
of a pursuit (as in cycling) using the split screen technique and a
single starting pistol for the races in two separate venues.
