Tom Pink Relays
500 children took part and it was wonderfully noisy and happy. The Tom Pink
Relays are now in their fourth year and a number of best performances were
recorded on Tuesday, notably in the Track Relays, Rugby and Northampton A C set
new record times for both the Chasing Kelly 1500m Continuous Relay for girls
under 13 and the Chasing Steve 1500m Continuous Relay for under 13 Boy’s. In
these relays teams of 5 members, each member running 3 times over 100m, attempt
to beat the British Records set by Kelly Holmes and Steve Cram. The Rugby and
Northampton girls set a time of 3 minutes 38.6 seconds and the boy’s a time of 3
minutes 25.5 seconds which is only the second occasion that Steve’s time has
been bettered. New individual best performances were set by:
Megan Mingle Solihull and Smallheath U11 Girls Soft Javelin 18m
James Woolley Tamworth U11 Boys Standing Long Jump 2.3m
Amelia Benjamin Birchfield U13 Girls Standing Triple Jump 6.78m
John Nwabueze Crewe & Nantwich U13 Boys Standing Triple Jump 7.58m
whilst Jonny Sheils of Solihull and Smallheath equalled the record for the U11
Boys Caber with 29 points.
As special guests, Bob Brown from Northampton, World Record Holder for the Pole
Vault in the over 70’s age group and Bernardino Lombao, the Spanish over 70
Record Holder, gave a demonstration of Pole Vaulting to the children and
Olympian Javelin Thrower, Tom Petranoff who had travelled over from New York,
demonstrated his javelin techniques. A visiting under 13 girls team from Madrid,
Mater Salvatoris College, were enthralled by the occasion and discussed the
possibilities of holding a similar programme in Madrid sometime
in the future.
